Hornets get series victory over Vulcans

After suffering a shocking defeat at the hands of the 3-33 Hawai’i-Hilo Vulcans, the Hornets came back to win the final game of the four-game series, 4-1.

Sac State scored in every first inning of the series, and on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Field, much was the same as Sac State got the head start on Hawai’i-Hilo.

Right fielder Jim Strombach lead off the game with a double, and catcher Matt Wilson smoked an RBI double off the left-center wall to score Strombach, narrowly missing his third home run of the season. Left fielder Pedro Santiago then laced a line drive up the middle, scoring Wilson from second base, giving the Hornets an early 2-0 lead.

Just two innings later, the Hornets tacked on another run.

Third baseman Billy Sinacori sent a soft line drive into left field, scoring center fielder Brian Conradi, making the score 3-0 after three innings.

In the fifth, the Vulcans would claw back and cut the deficit to just two runs.

A sacrifice fly from Sean Tamura, scoring Gary Ahu, Jr., gave Hawai’i-Hilo its first run of the day.

But in the seventh inning, Sac State would gain that run right back.

Conradi singled home pinch runner Travis Kassebaum, giving the Hornets a comfortable three run lead heading into the late innings.

Hornet reliever Marshall Plouffe made it so the Hornets didn’t need the extra run, however, shutting down the Vulcan offense to earn the save; the save was Plouffe’s third of the season, picking it up after pitching one and two-thirds perfect innings, allowing no hits while striking out three.

The 4-1 win gave the Hornets a 3-1 series victory.

Hornet starting pitcher Matt Campbell turned in a gem, going six and two-thirds innings, scattering four hits and giving up only one run for the win.

Sac State plays its next game at Hornet Field on Tuesday at 2 p.m. against California.
