After upsetting No.5 Arizona on Saturday, the Hornets couldn’t do the get a win against UC Irvine in the final game of the Hornet Jamboree.

In just the first inning, the Hornets struck first.

Third baseman David Flores sent an RBI single up the middle, scoring second baseman Taylor Watanabe.

Sac State would add onto the lead in the fourth inning, thanks to designated hitter Brett Flowers’ home run to left field; the home run was his fifth of the season, helping pad the Hornet lead to two.

Irvine would come right back the next inning, though.

Cody Cipriano cut the deficit in half with an RBI groundout to shortstop, scoring Matt Anderson from third base.

In the top of the sixth, Mark Wagner would tie up the score with RBI double to left, scoring Ollie Linton.

Just the next inning, Irvine would take the lead for good after Cipriano smacked a solo home run of his own to left-center. Daniel Miramontes tacked on another run with an RBI single to left field, scoring Danny McCarthy.

The Hornets would fight back, however, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh after Flores stole home; right fielder Jim Strombach, who was on first base, was caught in a pickle, and when retreating back to first base, Flores, who was on third, sprinted home and slid underneath Wagner’s tag.

That’d be all the Hornets would get, however, as the Irvine relief crew shut down the Sac State offense for the rest of the game, leaving Sacramento with a 4-3 win over the Hornets in the Hornet Jamboree.

Hornet starter Matt Campbell pitched well, but got the no-decision, going five and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs off four hits.

Sac State plays its next game at Hornet Field on May 3 at 2:30 p.m. against Santa Clara.
