Access slate takes election

The Access slate swept the Associated Students Inc. election, including Angel Barajas taking over the position of ASI president.

Josh Wood, outgoing ASI president, announced the official election results at 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday inside the University Union.

For the Measure 1 ballot question, which would redirect $60,000 from the ASI budget to hire and support a grants manager position, students approved the measure with 1,264 yes votes.

Measure 1 received 767 votes against.

For the Measure 3 ballot question, which asks students to approve a $27 fee increase to maintain the Health center, the measure passed narrowly.

In a close race, Measure 3 passed with 1,134 votes, while 1,061 students voted against the fee increase.

In the race for president, Barajas won with 44 percent, or 983 votes, followed by Horizon slate candidate Josh McGee who took 29 percent, with 656 votes.

Brandon Kline took 27 percent, with 603 votes.

“I just feel good,” Barajas said after a celebratory jump into the water fountain outside the Union. “It was a good race, and I believe it was a fair race. All the candidates on all the slates put in hard work.”

“I wish Angel all the best,” McGee said. “The students got what they deserved.”Barajas added he wanted to start by focusing on Destination 2010 and holding town hall meetings.

In the race for executive vice president, Access slate candidate James Shelby II won with 67 percent, or 1,423 votes.

Matthew Plummer was the runner-up with 33 percent, or 691 votes.

“I believe it’s an affirmation of the good job we did this past year,” said Shelby, current ASI vice president of finance. “Students are saying we did a good job.”

Other winners from the Access slate included Julio Velazquez, who took the vice president of finance position, and Robbie Abelon, who took the vice president of academic affairs.

“We know what we want to do; we have a vision,” Velazquez said of the Access slate.

Both Velazquez and Abelon ran unopposed.
