Hornets vault to victory over Brown

The Sacramento State gymnastics team won its second home meet of the season against Brown University’s Bears Sunday afternoon at the Hornets Nest.

Following Friday’s victory over Seattle Pacific, the Hornets placed first in all five individual events including the all-around competition. Sac State was able to run the table in all the events — taking first, second and third — except for the balance beam where the Bears’ Melissa Forziat took second on the beam with a score of 9.625.

Kimiye Narasaki placed first in the beam event with a score of 9.725, just short of last week’s score of 9.775.

“Kimiye nailed beam two meets in a row,” Sac State coach Kim Hughes said after the meet.

The big surprise of the meet was Carrie Kinghorn who, placing no lower than third in each single event, claimed first in the all-around results with a solid score of 38.150 out of a possible 40.00.

The ultimate goal for the team was to record competitive scores for the NCAA Regional competition according to Hughes.

“Today’s scores didn’t help us do that,” he said.

Although the Hornets were able to take first in all the individual events and beat Brown as a team, scores were lower than Friday’s event against Seattle Pacific.

“This next week we will need to work on our mental training,” said Jessica Hoffman, who won both the vault and bars on Sunday.

“Consistency is our biggest problem right now,” Hughes said. “We seem to be able to rise to the competition though.”

There will be plenty of competition to be had at next Sunday’s meet in Los Angeles.

Next week the Hornets face UCLA, possibly most their difficult opponent of the season. The Bruins won last year’s NCAA national championship and is currently ranked second just under Utah.

Notes: Hughes recorded his 200th career win Sunday…On vault the Hornets recorded five scores of at least 9.500.
