Women’s hoops appears rusty versus Nevada

More than a week off for finals left Sacramento State women’s basketball rusty as it fell 64-57 to Nevada Saturday afternoon at the Hornets Nest.

Nevada (4-4) was led by sophomore center Jessica Pressler’s double-double as she had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Two other Nevada players scored in double figures: senior guard Talisha Anderson, with 15 points, and freshman forward Meghan McGuire, who accounted for 17.

“We just didn’t seem like we didn’t do anything great today,” said Hornets coach Dan Muscatell. “We didn’t win the effort battle, we clearly didn’t win the execution battle and we didn’t win the toughness battle.”

The Hornets (2-5) came out flat, letting the Wolfpack start with a 7-0 run. Sac State got right back into it though as junior center Katelyn Ciampi scored eight points in the first half en route to finishing with 10 points on five-of-five shooting. Senior guard Tyeisha Brown also contributed six points in the first half.

For the game, both junior guard Cindy Alldrin and junior forward Ashley Cadotte recorded season-highs with 12 points. Alldrin added six rebounds, including two offensive boards and four steals.

After the intermission, the Hornets came out and stayed close, taking the lead 23-21 two minutes into the half. Unfortunately, Nevada went on a 21-10 run, lead by Pressler, Anderson and McGuire.

“We’re a second half team,” Cadotte said. “We come out in the first half and get down early and then have to fight our way back.”

The Hornets seemed to solve some of their recent free throw woes, as the team shot 76 percent from the stripe, led by Cadotte’s 10-for-14 performance from the charity stripe. Sac State made 16 free throws, tying a season-high.

The Hornets start a two game road trip, traveling first to UC Irvine on Tuesday and then to Texas Tech on Dec. 28. Texas Tech is ranked No. 12 in both the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll and the Associated Press poll.

The Hornets will be back at home in the Nest on New Year’s Eve Dec. 31 to play Wyoming at 1 p.m.
