Men’s soccer drops two pivotal road matches

In a season full of ups and downs, peaks and valleys, there has remained one constant for Sacramento State men’s soccer: sophomore forward Ryan Rhoads.

Rhoads scored his seventh goal in the last eight games, but it wasn’t enough for the Hornets, as they lost to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rival San Diego State 2-1 on Sunday.

With the loss, Sac State (5-10-1, 4-6-0 Mountain Pacific) remained winless on the road.

After a shaky start and then a torrid home winning streak, the Hornets found themselves in yet another rut again on Sunday; they got an early lead on the road against the team they beat two weeks before at home, but couldn’t hold it.

In the third minute of the match, Rhoads scored off sophomore midfielder Pedro Lupercio’s cross, beating Aztec goalkeeper Tally Hall to make the score 1-0.

The Aztecs tied the score up five minutes later, when Trey Meek beat Matt McDougall on a shot from five yards out.

Ten minutes later Frank Caruso beat McDougall from five yards out, giving the Aztecs the lead 2-1.

That was all for both teams, as neither could muster up enough offense to put a goal in the rest of the game, leaving the final 72 minutes scoreless.

McDougall had nine saves on the day, giving him 95 for the season. He now holds the record for most saves in a single season in program history.

On Friday, the Hornets played at UNLV.

Having no problem with them 12 days earlier at home, the Hornets struggled this time, losing 2-1 after a come-from-behind effort from UNLV.

Both teams played to a scoreless first half, and it was Rhoads again who provided the offense for the Hornets, who struggle to score on the road.

In the 66th minute, Rhoads got a cross from sophomore defender Eric Ortiz and knocked in a shot just out of the reach of UNLV goalkeeper Peter Clitheroe.

But six minutes later, Sac State’s lead was no more, as the Rebels responded to tie the game at 1-1.

Boomer Arbelaez got a corner kick from Brendon Bain and knocked it in past McDougall, evening the score.

The Rebels didn’t let the tie last very long, as they took the lead just five minutes later.

In the 77th minute, Bain was in the middle of the scoring again for the Rebels as he sent a cross to Rod Dyachenko.

Dyachenko shot it to the left post, past a diving McDougall, to give the Rebels a 2-1 lead. Both teams would score no more, and the Rebels clung to the small lead for the rest of the match, giving them the come-from-behind victory, 2-1.

Rhoads and senior forward Patrick Nelle led the Hornets with two shots on goal each. Sac State had five for the day to UNLV’s nine.

Sac State heads home for its final game at Hornet Field against ninth-ranked New Mexico on Sunday, Nov. 7.
