Who is that girl?

Sacramento State volleyball players were asking themselves that very query during their 3-1 (30-21, 24-30, 30-28, 30-24) victory over Montana State Saturday night at the Hornets Nest.

The answer is sophomore outside hitter Atlee Hubbard who led all players with 21 kills, posting a .304 hitting percentage and digging out 15 potential Bobcat points.

“I felt great tonight,” Hubbard, a transfer from Rhode Island said. “I haven’t felt that good on a volleyball court in a while–it’s about time.”

Hubbard, who has admittedly not played to full potential in her first season with the team, posted her season-high in kills and was just four shy of her career high of 25 dating back to her days as a freshman standout at Rhode Island.

“I feel like I really showed my teammates my full potential for the first time tonight,” Hubbard, who posted her fourth double-double in the team’s last five matches, said.

The Hornets (20-6, 8-2 Big Sky) further solidified their hold on second place in the Big Sky Conference with the win over third place Montana State (15-7, 7-4). The win clinched the 10th-consecutive 20-win season for head coach Debby Colberg and Sac State.

“When teams win a lot you have to give credit to the athletes,” Colberg, in her 29th season as head coach, said. “The types of kids that come here have a good work ethic and they have a good attitude.”

In addition the team has its best overall record since 1995, when it was 23-3 through 26 matches.

Hubbard and senior middle hitter Emily Wilson paced the Hornets in game one, each recording four kills. Wilson would end her night with 12 kills and a career-high tying 13 blocks.

The Bobcats posted six blocks in the second game and held Sac State to a .000 hitting percentage on their way to winning the frame handily 30-24 and taking a 1-1 split into the intermission.

The two games after the break were in stark contrast to games that preceded it. Each team posted near-identical hitting percentages of the night in the third game with the Hornets hitting .271 and Montana State hitting .269.

Hubbard dropped eight of her 21 kills in the third game to lead the team to a 30-28 victory. With the score tied at 26 late in the pivotal frame, she put on a real show. Hubbard accounted in some capacity for all of the Hornets final four points cranking three kills and combining with Wilson for a block of Bobcats outside hitter Meggie Malyurek, who led Montana State with 17 kills.

On the game’s final play, Hubbard swooped in to dig a ball right at the net and proceeded to place a perfect set from senior Stephanie Gamst in the back right corner to seal the frame in the Hornets favor.

“We really fed off Atlee’s offense tonight, something we haven’t done yet this year,” Colberg said.

Just as Hubbard led the team in game three, game four was Wilson’s time to shine. The senior had five of her career-high tying 13 blocks in the game and helped force seven Bobcat attack errors.

“Emily really worked hard for us tonight,” Colberg said.

On the other hand, the Sac State offense moved as fluidly as it would all night in the fourth game as the Hornets hit .339 and committed just three attack errors while putting down 22 kills.

Senior outside hitter Sandra Bandimere (13) and freshman Lindsay Haupt joined Hubbard and Wilson with double figures in kills. Haupt continued her tear and has hit above .300 in her past five matches.

Senior setter Stephanie Gamst had another double-double with 53 assists and 17 digs; it is her fourth in the past five matches.

Mallory Hook, the Hornets junior libero, had 26 digs tying her career high.
