Let the points fall like rain.

The scoring drought is over for Sacramento State (2-4, 1-2 Big Sky) football after a 31-12 victory over Big Sky conference foe Weber State (0-7, 0-4) on Saturday night at Hornet Stadium.

Junior running back Tyronne Gross led a brutal ground game, amassing 126 yards and two touchdowns, while the Hornet defense did not allow a touchdown and was highlighted by senior corner Ramon Payne’s two interceptions.

“Relax and have fun,” head coach Steve Mooshagian said. “Everyone was trying too hard. Tonight was the first time we had fun all year.”

Sac State’s defense allowed only 59 rushing yards in its first victory in a month. More importantly, the Hornet defense intercepted Weber State quarterback Kyle Bauer four times overall and junior linebacker Matt Logue returned one for a touchdown.

Senior quarterback Ryan Leadingham kept the offense consistent and controlled completing 14 passes out of 24 attempts for 154 yards, however he was sacked five times by the Wildcat defense.

“If we play like we did tonight the rest of the year, we’ll be competitive,” Mooshagian said.

The Hornets controlled the pace of the game by earning an early advantage over head coach Jerry Graybeal and the Wildcats. Sac State was held until the end of the first quarter without a score because of freshman running back Ryan Mole fumbling the football.

With 3:40 left in the first quarter, Gross ran the ball 19 yards to the end zone for the first Hornets’ score. The Sac State defense stepped up in the second quarter and recorded its first score of the year as junior linebacker Matt Logue picked off Bauer and danced 14 yards to the end zone.

“I finally got one,” said Logue, who got his first career interception. “They happened to be in man-to-man … and I realized he was going out for a screen so I laid back to make sure the quarterback would still throw the ball.”

Later on the in the second quarter Mooshagian went to his bag of tricks to secure the victory. With 5:38 left the first half, Mole made up for his earlier fumble as he found sophomore wide receiver Ryan Coogler for six on a crafty half back pass.

The Hornets tacked on three extra points headed into the locker room before the half. Sophomore kicker Mitch Lively connected on a 33-yard attempt to put Sac State up 24-6. The Wildcats refused to go down without a fight as junior kicker Joe Johnson nailed a 36-yard field goal as the first half expired.

Gross tightened the noose with 1:34 remaining in the game and added to his stat column with another 14-yard touchdown run, ensuring the Hornets’ second win of the season.

“It felt good, first time in a long time I felt healthy … practice was going well and the offensive line did a great job,” Gross said.

Sac State earned its first conference win on Saturday night. The win moved the Hornets above Weber State and Idaho State and into sixth place overall in the Big Sky Conference.

“It’s a funny league and right now we’re sitting right in the middle of it,” Mooshagian said.

The Hornets next travel to Idaho State (1-5, 0-3) to face a Bengal squad that is winless in conference. Saturday night’s match-up in Pocatello, Idaho, will be the second time of three overall this year that the Hornets will play at an opponents Homecoming.
