If you feel good, you look good

Michelle Ramella

Girls always want to look their best; it’s why we go shopping so much and spend all that time in front of the mirror getting ready. We feel like we have to in some way look better then the rest of the girls around us so we can get all the guys attention. But the guys aren’t the only ones we try to impress. Yes, that’s right girls dress to impress other girls too. Only we want to make sure that we look better in what we are wearing or to see how our own bodies compare with other girls.

Shopping used to be easy. I could find something that I looked good in and that fit me right. But now all you can find is an unidentifiable five-inch piece of cloth that costs $20. Puzzled, I asked one of the sales clerks and she told me it was “a skirt.” You can’t be serious I thought, this little thing is a skirt? I couldn’t even cover my whole butt with it. It almost looks like I would have to have no butt or hips at all to fit into the little thing. What about us girls who have a butt or even big hips? The stores are telling us that we should lose weight and slim down. They always have more of the smaller sizes in stock to buy when many girls are bigger and can’t fit into those itsy bitsy things.

The stores’ only having those little skirts in mostly little sizes doesn’t give girls much of a choice about how to look or what size they should be. Shopping for clothes shouldn’t have to be one of those one-size fits all things; it should be for the pure enjoyment of buying something that makes you feel good. The world is forcing girls to develop eating disorders because they are not what America finds as standard or normal. Can you imagine having all the girls in the world being between a size one and a size three? We would all be in rehab recovering from some sort of eating disorder.

My friends and I sit around and criticize what other girls are wearing. We like to see who’s in fashion and who’s not. We say things like, “What was she thinking when she put that on?” or “That outfit makes her look fat.” We always notice those girls who aren’t wearing bras but need to and laugh at them because of how bad it looks. Most importantly though we point out the girls who we wished we looked like. They are always the thin beautiful ones that always get attention.

I’ve had friends who would always talk to me about how they had to lose weight and they couldn’t have been more then 120 pounds. They thought they were fat! Even the really thin ones say how they have to lose a few pounds. When the thin ones say it, you know there’s something wrong with yourself. It makes you wonder how they see you. Even models and movie stars want to lose weight or are being controlled by an eating disorder. Like Mary-Kate Olsen, who was recently admitted to rehab for her eating disorder.

I have no problem with girls thinner then me, but some of these girls are ridiculously thin. You wonder if they have an eating disorder because of how thin they are or if they ever eat anything. I hate those girls who can eat whatever they want and not gain anything, wish that was the case with me. It’s sad that girls are trying to be thin because they think that they look better or maybe even get more guys. There is nothing wrong with being bigger than other girls. You only have to be happy with how you look and feel. Many guys don’t care how thin you are and a lot of guys like girls who aren’t all skin and bones.

Ladies, remember next time when you step out, just as long as you feel good about how you look it shouldn’t matter what anyone else thinks.
