Amey, Oh My

All-American Fred Amey is at it again, doing what all-Americans do.

In Sacramento State’s 2004 home opener, Amey recorded eight receptions for 158 yards with two touchdowns en route to surpassing 3,000 career receiving yards and leading the Hornets to their first victory of the year.

“Not too often I score one touchdown, let alone two; but, I know its God working through me and it feels good to get the win,” Amey said.

In the opening minutes of the third quarter, the Hornets needed to put points on the board in order to make it a two score ball game.

Amey kept the drive moving with a 26-yard reception, taking the ball deep into Thunderbird territory and was pushed out of bounds at the 20-yard line.

With the ball on the five-yard line, Leadingham looked to Amey to make a big play in the back of the end zone. Struggling to stay in bounds, Amey made an awe-inspiring, spinning grab to put the Hornets up by 14 points.

“We wanted to get the ball to begin the second half, it was big for us to go down and score and show this team has heart,” head coach Steve Mooshagian said.

After a quick strike by Southern Utah, Amey picked up where he left off. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Amey returned a kick 42 yards to give Sac State excellent field position.

All knotted up with 7:16 left in regulation after a lengthy Southern Utah drive to tie, the Hornets needed just a little bit more.

Warming up with an 11-yard reception, Amey hit a deep post, catching the ball across the middle of the field and running the ball 50 yards to the house, snapping the tie.

Last week, Amey and the Hornet offensive failed to produce against the Division 1 Nevada Wolf Pack. During week one, Amey had four grabs for 47 yards and no touchdowns. This week Amey had no problems, recording better numbers after the first half.

Next Saturday, Sac State heads down Interstate 80 to meet rivals UC Davis in the 51st annual Causeway Classic. In 2003, Amey caught eight balls for 110 yards and a touchdown.

This year the Hornets go out hungry against the Aggies looking for their first Causeway victory since 1999 and first victory since 1996 at Toomey Field.
