Hightened security expected during Olympic trials

As car bombs explode in Olympic host city Athens, Greece,security has become a concern at Sacramento State with thebeginning of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials less than60 days away.

This is the second time Sac State has hostedthe track and field trials, an event that will determine themake-up of the men’s and women’s U.S track and fieldteam. Set to begin July 9 and end July 18, there will be a two-daybreak from competition on July 13-14.

Ronald Grant, director of Support Services,said the effects on the campus will be minimal during the summersession because of the decrease in student enrollment. Grant alsosaid that State University Drive West will be blocked from ParkingStructure I to Stadium Drive, about one-eighth of a mile.

The 2000 U.S Olympic track and field trialswere also held at Sac State. Grant said this year’s securitywould be increased, augmented by the FBI, as well as SacramentoCity and California State Police.

Attendance records were set during the 2000trials with a turnout of over 187,000 spectators during the courseof the week-long event, and similar crowds are expected thisyear.
