Hornets split six-pack of games on Hawaiian islands

The Hornets spent their spring break the way many other students wish they had — Hawaiian style. And they managed to fit in some baseball, taking three of six games at the University of Hawaii and the University of Hawaii-Hilo.

The Hornets arrived in Hawaii in the midst of a four-game losing skid, including a three game sweep at the hands of UC Santa Barbara a week ago.

On Saturday, the Hornets split a double header with Hilo, winning the second game 4-3. Pedro Santiago led the offense, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Pitcher Andy Mohr scattered 10 hits in five innings and only two runs for the win. Mohr is now 4-1 on the season.

In game one, Hawaii-Hilo won 4-3 on a bases loaded RBI single from David Chu off Hornet reliever Mick Joyce. Joyce took the loss after giving up three hits and one run in relief. Starter Billy Sinacori lasted six innings before getting pulled, allowing three runs on seven hits.

The Hornets split another double header with Hawaii-Hilo on Friday, dropping the second game 5-0.

Vulcans starter Clay Dougherty pitched a complete game shut out, holding the Hornets to just two hits, while striking out three.

Ethan Katz suffered the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits in a rocky six innings. The normally reliable Katz is now 6-3 on the season.

In game one, Hornet starter Justin Deme was dominant in six innings scattering seven hits and just one run en route to a 4-2 win. Deme is now 3-2 on the season. Renecke Stelzriede earned his fourth save of the season after throwing an inning of scoreless relief.

Brett Flowers and Ryan Browne were both 2-for-3 with one RBI.

The trip began with a 6-3 win at the University of Hawaii Rainbows on Tuesday and a 5-4 loss on Wednesday.

The Hornets, 22-22, face the final stretch of the season with nine of the final 17 games remaining at Hornet Field.

Upon returning home, the Hornets will open a three-game series this weekend when Oregon State begins their visit on Friday afternoon.
