A new nursing club on campus is opening eyes around the community and internationally. The Sacramento State Trans-cultural Nursing Group, with the help of the Unite for Sight organization, is holding an eyeglass drive to benefit the people of Africa and Asia.

Prescription eyeglasses or non-prescription UV-protected sunglasses will be collected in bins all over campus Feb. 17 – March 2. After the drive, the glasses will be distributed to Muhimbili Hospital in Tanzania, where the vision needs of children and adults will hopefully be met with a pair of glasses.

“It is such an easy thing to do and it has such a huge impact,” said senior nursing major Sahar Nourezini.

In addition to running the eyeglass drive, the Trans-cultural Nursing Group will be volunteering in Mexico over spring break. One of the goals of the Trans-Cultural Nursing Group is to raise cross-cultural competence in nursing.

“In order to heal the person, you have to approach them as a whole,” said Nourezini.

Eyeglass collection bins are located in Lassen Hall, El Dorado Hall, the first floor of the Library and the first floor of the University Union.
