Volleyball rebounds in Big Sky

The Sacramento State volleyball team rebounded convincingly from its Oct. 12 loss to Eastern Washington University by steamrolling Idaho State University and Weber State University last week at Hornet Gym.

In their 3-0 sweep of Idaho State on Saturday, Sac State’s .424 hitting percentage was good enough for fifth best in school history.

The Hornets hit .400 or better in two of the three games, while holding the Bengals to .135, including .073 in game three.

“We’re trying to concentrate on playing more of an even match instead of being so up and down,” head coach Debby Colberg said. “As a team, we’re finally starting to do that.”

Freshman outside hitter Jennifer Ferguson led the Hornets with 13 kills. She also had a .500 hitting percentage committed no errors in 26 attacks.

“I’m definitely building confidence out there,” Ferguson said. “The college game was different at first, but it’s getting easier.”

Sac State opened the match by falling behind 1-0 in the first game but solid serves led to three Bengal errors and the Hornets opened up a 7-2 lead never looking back.

Setter Lisa Beauchene and middle hitter Shannon Arts combined for four blocks and the Hornets committed just one error in the 30-15 win.

The rest of the match was closer on the scoreboard, but Idaho State rarely applied any pressure.

Alison Gorny had seven kills for the Bengals in the second game and at one point the team was within two of the Hornets at 25-23, but nine errors did them in.

Ferguson had five kills and the Hornets prevailed 30-25. Outside hitter Sandra Bandimere continued her late-season objective of asserting herself on defense by contributing six of her 13 digs.

In game three Sac State jumped out to a 6-1 lead but the Idaho State fought back to within four at 12-8. It was the wake-up call the Hornets needed as they eventually built a 27-11 lead.

“We tend to lose focus against this team,” Colberg said. “We made some mistakes on easy plays, but then we made some difficult plays look easy.”

On Thursday,Sac State handed Weber State their fourth Big Sky Conference loss of the season. Solid performances up and down the lineup carried the Hornets to the 3-1 win.

Beauchene led the team with her seventh triple-double of the year (10 kills, 40 assists, 13 digs). Arts and middle hitter Kazmiera Imrie had double figure digs and Bandimere fell one kill short of a double-double (nine kills, 10 digs).

Ferguson and middle hitter Emily Wilson also had good nights, chipping in eight kills each and combining for 12 digs.

Ferguson admitted that the loss at Eastern Washington motivated the team as they returned home.

“It ticked us off,” Ferguson said. “I’m just glad we went up in terms of our play.”The Hornets traveled to the University of San Francisco Yesterday; results were not available at press time.
