Still searching for first conference win

Sacramento State (0-1-1) will try for its first Big Sky Conference victory when the Weber State Wildcats travel to Sacramento for a Big Sky showdown at 3 p.m. Friday.

The Wildcats currently sit atop the conference with a 3-0 record.

After dropping four straight non-conference matches, the Wildcats have won their first three Big Sky conference matches and have yet to give up a goal in conference play.

Their third win came on Saturday with a 2-0 defeat of the University of Montana. The other two wins were 2-0 shutouts against Eastern Washington University and defending Big Sky Champion Idaho State.

Junior goalkeeper Melanie Stratford has spent every minute in the net and has yet to yield a goal, while recording 15 saves in three games. Senior Kaleen Grant was named Big Sky conference Defensive Player of the Week for Oct. 8-13.

Seniors Krista Davis and Anna Niesen lead a balanced Wildcat scoring attack with three goals each, while four other players have two goals each.

Following the match up with Weber State, the Hornets will host the Idaho State Bengals (1-2) at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The two time defending Big Sky champions have surprisingly struggled this season. Their 5-8-1 overall record included a seven-game losing streak that ended on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Eastern Washington University.

During the losing streak the Bengals didn’t score any goals. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Shannon Boyle has already given up 17 goals this season, after allowing 23 for the entire 2002 season.

Junior Stacey Allen has just three goals this season after leading the Bengals with 11 last season en route to the title.

With just four conference games left, this weekend will prove to be pivotal in the Hornets’ hopes of making a run at the playoffs.
