Men’s soccer to face 20th ranked Santa Clara

The Sacramento State men’s soccer team hits the road again this weekend with a match at the University of San Francisco on Friday and another at the University of Santa Clara on Sunday.

Coming off a disappointing weekend in which the team was outscored 9-1 and outshot 46-14, the Hornets will try to stop their four-match losing streak and overall six-game winless streak.

Sac State (2-6-1) was shutout 3-0 in their match versus UC Santa Barbara (7-0-1) at Hornet Soccer Field Sunday and on Friday the Hornets lost their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener 6-1 against the Spartans of San Jose State (4-1-2).

The USF Dons, like the Hornets, have seen their share of disappointing results this season. Saturday, they lost to Western Washington 2-0 to drop their record to 3-8.

But the Dons do have offensive fire power.

Midfielder/forward Paul Carter leads the team with 10 points (four goals, two assists) and forward Patrick Ryan is tied with Carter for the team lead in goals with four, including two game-winning goals this season.

Santa Clara is a perennial soccer power in both the men’s and women’s programs. The Broncos have been ranked as high as number five this season and will no doubt be ready for a Hornet club that is still trying to find its team identity.

The Hornets’ next home game will be at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10 when they take on CSU-Monterey Bay at Hornet Soccer Field.
