Two juvenile suspects were arrested on suspicion of attempted bicycle theft on March 31.

The pair was spotted riding onto campus on a single bicycle.

“The two suspects returned to the bike compound after a police officer asked them to leave,” Public Information Officer John Hamrick said. “One was riding on the handle bars, planning to steal another bike so they could ride off on the bicycle they were planning to steal.”

Between March 21-24, five bicycles were stolen from various locations on campus in what appears to be related events.

“With the spring season approaching, Police expect an increase in bike theft, and the police anticipate there will be more bicycles stolen in the Spring than in the Fall semester,” Hamrick said.

On Saturday, March 22 two bicycles were stolen from Draper Hall and Bike Compound One, the only guarded compound. The total stolen lost value of all five bikes that weekend is $1170, according to police records.

“(The) campus police do not know at this time whether the string of bike thefts are related to these two suspects,” Hamrick said. The two juveniles, ages 14 and 15, were arrested before they had the chance to steal a bicycle.

“(One) juvenile, 14, was found with a pair of bolt cutters underneath his clothing,” Hamrick said. He was arrested and booked into Juvenile Hall. The 15 year-old juvenile was arrested on conspiracy charges and was released to his mother, he said.
