ASI meeting to address stipends, 2003-4 budget

The ASI budget for next year will be unveiled Wednesday at the ASI Board of Directors meeting.

The stipend review committee will also present their findings.

Last year, both subjects drew controversy, as the review committee recommended a raise for the ASI officers. Several directors stood against the decision.

Then-president Artemio Pimentel proposed an idea to cut from all programs, including the Children’s Center and KSSU, to incorporate $150 raises for all 13 members of the Board of Directors.

Former stipend review committee member Lisanne Nakayama favored taking the money for the raises from the Leadership portion of the budget, which pays for office supplies and officer retreats, among other things.

Currently, the president receives a $1,080 monthly stipend. Three executive officers — the Executive Vice President and the Vice Presidents of University Affairs and Finance — each earn $950 a month. The nine college directors each receive $350 a month.

Current president Eric Guerra and Director of Engineering and Computer Science Fahnmusa Jangaba serve on this year’s stipend review committee along with two students-at-large.

Due to the stipend controversy last year, the passing of the budget was delayed three weeks.

Vice President of Finance and presidential hopeful Peter Ucovich said that he expects a raise for the top two ASI officers to be recommended to the Board.

Ucovich, who leads the Finance and Budget committee that created the proposed budget, said that there is an increase in DOC/SEL funding, which helps pay for projects for campus clubs and students.

“I’ve proposed a $26,000 increase in funding,” Ucovich said.

This year’s $8.9 million budget is the largest ever.
