Anti-war protesters rally on campus

Protesters assembled in the library quad today to demonstrate anger, anguish and disagreement felt on the day after U.S. bombing began on Iraq.

The protest co-sponsored by Campus Peace Action, International Affairs Graduate Students, the Muslim Student Association, Students for Justice in Palestine, and A.F.R.I.K.A. Sac State was one of the many colleges throughout the country holding peace rallies.

Fliers for the rally began circulating around campus Wednesday for the emergency protest.

Speakers at the rally consisted of faculty, students, community members, campus organization leaders and even Vietnam veterans. Protesters sang, read poetry and expressed their discontent with the U.S. government and its decision making.

Not all of the approximately 350 attendees were in favor of the rally and its purpose.

Some students shouted in objection while speakers voiced their non-approval of the war.

Many commented from the sidelines, “we’re already having a war — you’re not ‘gonna stop it.” A number of students were annoyed at what they felt was a display of anti-Americanism.

“I came here to see what kind of turnout there would be and to hear what people had to say,” said Michelle Sandell, philosophy lecturer. “I am more inclined to be in support of this rally.”
