Anti-Muslim graffiti in library bathrooms

Anti-Muslim and Middle Eastern graffiti was painted on men’s rest room walls on three floors of the library recently, campus officials said.

“It was slanderous toward the Muslim community,” said Leonard Valdez, director of the Multi-Cultural Center.

Valdez arrived in the rest room at the same time the painters did to cover the walls and was taken aback by graffiti, he said.

“Good luck sand niggers” and “Don’t forget Dune Coon” were some of the phrases Valdez recalled seeing.

Although a report was made to facilities management, library officials knew nothing about the incident, and they do not know who reported it. Campus police were not informed either, according to their media log.

“We know that it happened, but it’s so unusual that it happened the way it did,” said Terry Webb, Director and Dean of the library.

“The library has a good system in place to handle these types of things,” Webb said. “The procedures are there, but sometimes these things slip through the cracks.”

When graffiti occurs, library policy is to document it, take photos and report the incident to facilities management, Webb said.
