Sac State has strong showing at Crew Classic

It?s amazing how the thrill of victory and the agonyof defeat can be separated by just a fraction of asecond. Unfortunately, Sacramento State Universitieswomen?s varsity rowing team was on the bitter end ofthe spectrum.

In the 2000-meter race, the Hornets finished a closesecond with a time of 6 minutes 59.97 seconds in thePetite Final of the San Diego Crew Classic Sunday atMission Bay.

The victorious Loyola Marymount University Lionsmeanwhile powered their way to the top spot finishingwith a time of 6:59.70.

The Hornets were in control for the majority of therace, as they led at the 500, 1000 and 1500-metermarks, but couldn?t hold off the charging Lions at the finish line.

“It?s difficult when you?re in control of a race,”Hornet coach Bill Zack said. “And then to have it slipout of your grasp in the last few meters, it?s adifficult thing to deal with.”

Coach Zack went with the same varsity-eight lineup ashe did yesterday with: Robyn Soliman at bow, StephanieBrow at the two seat, Adelle Reimer at three, VeronicaKarpinski at four, Erika Bracy at five, Megan Warrenat six, Megan Spitze at seven, Mieke Boynton at strokeand Breanne Hart at coxswain.

The Hornets made it to the Petite final as a result oftheir performance on Saturday in which they placedfourth in their heat with a time of 7:07.84.

The University of Massachusetts paced the heat with awinning time of 6:58.60 followed by SMU (7:01.16) andLoyola Marymount (7:04.86).

On Saturday, the women?s second varsity also placedfifth in their heat (7:23.20) falling victim to firstplace Virginia (6:54.80), second place Ohio State(6:58.60) and third place Kansas State (7:19.60).

The Hornets? lineup consisted of Chanel Patterson atbow, Rebecca Hurtt at two, Sheena Tahilramani atthree, Angela Tombolini at four, Paula Clamurro atfive, Pattie Shagam at six, Jamie Weatherfield atseven, Sarah Mckenzie at stoke and Jenna Dubois atcoxswain.

The novice-eight duplicated the performance of thesecond varsity eight placing fifth in heat C recordinga time of 7:34.28. Then in the third-level final theHornet?s placed second (7:13.84) behind UC Davis(7:07.40).

The novice eight lineup consisted of Susan Kulzer atbow, Jennifer Ives at two, Dawn Warren at three, JodiJohnson at four, Kesey Smith at Five, Kirstie Smith at six, Hannah Metzer at seven, Katie Litvinchukat stroke and Nicole Reyes at coxswain.

“I was proud of the effort that we got this weekend,”coach Bill Zack said. “I think we definitely canimprove on some things that will help us get back onthe winning track.”

The Hornets will next compete against rival UC Davison Saturday, April 13, for the Jean Runyon Cup at thePort of Sacramento. The Hornets have owned the Aggie’sover the past three years and look to extend thestreak to four.
