St. Mary’s College snaps 23-game skid vs. Hornet basketball team

Sac State men?s basketball could not shake off the early-season rust against St. Mary?s on Tuesday.

The final 78-64 score gave the Hornets their 25th straight road loss and helped end St. Mary College?s 23-game losing skid. The player of the game was Chase Poole from the Gaels with 22 points and 17 rebounds.The Hornets seemed to get off a success story or two despite painful losses this season. Sac State shot over 50 percent from the floor, a sign of an improving offense.

Junior Joe Dawson for the Hornets scored a team high 15-points, all of which came in the second half. He also hit 3-pointer from down town to contribute to a semi-comeback. However, the Hornets lacked shot attempts, thus resulting in their lower score.

Rebounding aided in the victory for the Gaels as they pulled down 13 extra boards over Sac State, 34-21.Sac State jumped out ahead early in the game. St. Mary?s took their first lead 14-13 and proved never to trail again. The Gaels ended the first half on a 25-7 run led by Poole?s dominant inside game. The Hornets tried to get themselves back in the game and pulled within 11, but that?s as close as they would get.

Poole and a total of 21 turnovers sealed the Hornet?s fate at St. Mary?s. This game drops Sac States overall record to 1-4 while the victory improved the once winless Gaels to 1-3.
