Crew rows to first place finishes

The Sacramento State men?s and women?s rowing teams took first place in two of the 38 events held at Head of the American Fall Regatta on Sunday.

The women?s rowing team took first place over Newport Aquatic Center (20 minutes, 30 seconds) in the women?s quad category. Four boats competed in the race, with the Hornets logging a time of 19:22.

The Sacramento State men?s team placed first and third in the heavyweight four category. With 13 boats in the event, the Hornets finished the race with a time of 16:46, ahead of University of California, Davis? team “A,” which took second place with a 16:53 finish.

Sac State also placed third in the competition with a time of 17:19.With the season in full swing, Sac State men?s coach Sam Swietzer said it is too early to tell whether his young team will be successful this year. He said last year was spent rebuilding the team, but is certain it will be a better season than last year.

“We need to improve on our experience and fitness,” Sweitzer said.

Many schools participated at the Head of the American. Sac State participated in nine of the 38 competitions: The women?s team raced in four competitions and the men raced in five.Sweitzer emphasized the men?s open eight competition, which 11 teams participated in, including Stanford and UC Davis. The Hornets took fourth place (with a time of 16:54), and fifth place (16:56) in the race.

Sweitzer added that his team was in good company behind Stanford and UC Davis. He said both of those schools have great programs, and racing them is good experience for the team.

Out of the 10 boats that competed in the men?s lightweight four, the Hornets took second place with a 17:53 finish, behind UC Davis? team “A,” which had a time of 17:26. Sac State also competed in the men?s novice collegiate eight, a six-boat race, with fourth place (18:18) and sixth place (19:06) finishes, respectively.

In the women?s novice eight, the Hornets finished third with a time of 20:16 and sixth with a 24:27.California took first (18:48) and St. Mary?s College had second (19:53). In the women?s open eight race, Sac State finished ninth with a time of 19:03.
