Rounding out the week: Live music, dance

Wednesday, May 9Sacramento State’s Jazz-ee Dance Company will kick off a string of live shows titled “Experience This,” at 8 p.m. today in Solano Hall’s Dancespace studio. The performances run through May 19.

The shows will feature several student-choreographed dance pieces covering a variety of styles performed to music from artists such as Jurassic 5, The Beatles and Enya. The dance styles will include hip-hop, character jazz, thrash jazz, tap and folkloric dancing. Tickets are available at Central Ticket Office for $12 general admission, $10 for students and $8 for children under 12.

Thursday, May 10World music instrumentalist Todd Green will bring his array of international instruments to the University Union’s Hinde Auditorium for a free one-man-band show at 11:45 a.m. Thursday.

Green plays a variety of exotic instruments, from Moroccan bongo drums to the kamenchech, sampling riffs as he plays them and then adding more as he goes for depth and texture.For more information about Todd Green’s concert call 278-6997.

Friday, May 11The internationally acclaimed band Mono Blanco will perform its brand of traditional Mexican dance and music at the Joe Serna, Jr. Plaza outside the University Union for a free concert at noon on Friday.

Formed of families from the rural areas around Veracruz, Mexico in 1980, the group has toured throughout the U.S., Asia, Europe and Central America, combining traditional elements with modern improvisational techniques. Friday’s performance will offer up a style called son jarocho, which is influenced by Spanish and African-American cultures. For more information about Mono Blanco’s concert, call 278-6101.
