Gabriela Lundquist won the singles title to lead Sac State in the 28th Annual Sacramento Open at McKinley Park.

The Hornets were well represented in this event, as Laila Karia and Caroline Svensson joined Lundquist in the semi-finals. The Sac State athletes made up three of the top four semi-finalists in the event.

According to Coach Bill Campbell, the matches were had fought. “We had long, three set matches,” said Campbell.

The team’s performance and stamina can be attributed to its rigorous training regime. “We practice every day for 3 hours,” Campbell said. “We play matches and do a lot of drilling.”

The team’s impressive showing in the season’s opening tournament leaves their coach with high expectations.

“The talent level is the best the school has ever had,” Campbell said. “We should do well and we’re still a young team.”

The Hornets next tournament is the Saint Mary’s Tournament, which begins today.
