Microphone Check: Grand Theft Audio/London-Sire Records
December 6, 2000
For those of you who like loud 80s guitar, technology-induced music with a splash of ‘smart-ass’ lyrics, you definitely want to check out Grand Theft Audio.
They’ve been described as a combination of the Sex Pistols, AC/DC and Prodigy. Even though it seems like it wouldn’t flow, this band ties it all in really well. With their new CD out in stores now, the band also has a lead spot on the soundtrack of, “Dude Where’s My Car?” with their controversial single, “Stoopid Ass.”
Originally from the UK, this band has made an impact on the rock and alternative scene for being one of the few to merge it with electronica.
“In England at the moment, there’s a big divide between rock bands, metal bands and electronica bands,” lead singer, Jay Butler said. “It’s like you can’t have a song that’s catchy if you’re a rock band, and you’re not supposed to rock if you’re an electronica band. But we don’t look at music that way, so we took all the little bits that we liked and bastardized them to build the kind of band we wanted to be in. We wanted to create a band that was like all your favorite bands at the same time.”
Grand Theft Audio were originally known as the Infidels, but soon changed their name after hearing of other bands with the same moniker. The band consists of lead singer, Butler, drummer, Rich Battersby (formerly of the Wildhearts), guitarist, Chris McCormack (formerly of 3 Colors Red), and Ralph Jezzard on the keyboard. Jezzard is famously known as being the co-writer for the worldwide hit, “Unbelievable.”
The band has been overwhelmed with their current projects, but will be hitting American soil in the upcoming months for their tour.
