Hornets break Division I record

Sac State and Cal State Northridge scored the most points ever in a Division 1 football game during the Hornets 64-61 victory Saturday night at Fred Anderson Field.

There were 18 touchdowns, to go along with the 125 points. No drive in the game lasted even five minutes and the two teams combined for 1,146 yards of total offense.

The Hornets are now 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the Big Sky Conference, still not giving up on the playoffs. The Matadors dropped to 3-6 overall and 2-5 in the Big Sky Conference.

“What a game. I’ve never been in game like that,” Sac State head coach John Volek said. “The kids were resilient.”

In the win, Sac State’s senior running back Charles Roberts moved into fifth place on the all-time college rushing list, upping his total to 6,366 career rushing yards. He needs 33 yards at Northern Arizona next week, his last game as a Hornet, to surpass Ron Dayne as Division 1’s all-time leading rusher.

“It was my last home game. I knew that if I played hard, the records would come,” Roberts said about passing Ricky Williams on the rushing list, among other running backs. “It (passing Williams) feels good. It’s something that I had my eye on. I wanted to try and catch Dayne tonight in front of the home crowd.”

In the game, Roberts gained 157 yards on 33 carries, pushing his season total to 1,437. He also ran in two touchdowns in the shoot-out.

On a more somber note, senior Hornet receiver Scott Towne suffered a concussion and a sprained knee and was treated at a nearby hospital. Before he left the game in the second quarter, Towne had already caught four passes from Ricky Ray for 130 yards and scored a touchdown.

Sac State’s Brandon Coleman made an interception at the one-yard line late in the fourth quarter to help ensure the victory for Sac State.

Ray completed 18 passes in 25 attempts, totaling 344 yards and three touchdowns for Sac State. Ray also ran in three one-yard touchdowns, giving him nine rushing touchdowns for the season.

Senior Lamont Webb complemented Towne’s effort with 5 catches for 92 yards while scoring a touchdown of his own. Webb also returned a kick 90 yards for a touchdown.

Another Ray target was sophomore Gary Austin, Jr., who added five catches for 77 yards and one touchdown.

Defensively, senior Anthony Daisley recorded ten tackles and 1.5 sacks. His teammate Eldon Gabourel also got 10 tackles while adding a forced fumble.
