The Sacramento State Hornets beat the Northern Colorado Bears Thursday night at home 64-62 with help from center Atty Boyer, who made the game-winning layup with 12 seconds left in regulation to hold off the Bears. The win at home by the Hornets makes their record 5-15, 3-5 in the Big Sky Conference, and the Bears’ record 10-10, 4-3. “It feels really good, actually. Especially a win that’s that close,” said Boyer, who finished the game with her second double-double of the season, recording 24 points and 12 rebounds. “We all played together tonight and we came back at the end with toughness.” The Hornets forced the Bears to commit 17 turnovers which lead to the Hornets getting 20 points off the Bears’ turnovers. The Bears took the lead late in the first half and finished the half with a two-point lead over the Hornets. During the second half the Hornets and Bears traded baskets back and forth until Boyer’s layup with 12 seconds secured the lead and won the Hornets the game. Late in the first half guard Sami Field-Polisso was hit unintentionally by an elbow, leaving a cut above her eye. She left the game for a short period of time but came back to finish the game with 11 points and seven assists.

“It was an inadvertant elbow,” Field-Polisso said. Hornets coach Dan Muscatell was pleased with the team. “I was most pleased with our fight,” Muscatell said. “I thought (the Bears) made a couple of adjustments that hurt us a bit defensively, so you have to give them credit.” The next game for the Hornets is on the road on Feb. 7 at 7:05 p.m. against Eastern Washington.
