The WELL is making changes to it services, offering free group fitness classes and using an app to ease scheduling classes.
As of May 15 — cardio, strength, mind and body classes became free to every person with a WELL membership. There are 46 total group fitness classes including Zumba, Yoga and Mat Pilates, which allows students to join in on classes they other wise might not.
“I tried one class — it was a yoga class and I didn’t really like it,” said Hugorafael Chacon-Kreysa, a sophomore construction management major. “But I’m glad it was free.”
Small group training classes such as Kettlebell Training and Boxing Basics still require a fee of $6 for one class or a semester-long pass for $48. The class sizes are smaller, allowing students to get more individual attention from the instructor.
“The reason they are not free is because they are taught by personal trainers,” said Kendra Densmore, Group Fitness Coordinator. “We keep the size for just eight people and so people are paying for that personalized service given by the personal trainers.”
Previously, a fee had to be charged in order for The WELL to cover additional services like group fitness and personal training. According to Densmore, expenses were changed so that students could enjoy free group fitness at The WELL.
“This is my first year so it sounds like a good opportunity to try different classes,” said junior biology major Miranda Vig.
In order to organize class signups, The WELL has started to utilize an app called MindBody. The app is used by a variety of fitness and wellness organizations and allows users to check in to each class directly from the app.
“The benefit to members is that they can book the spot in a class,” Densmore said. “Because group fitness is free, potentially a lot of classes can be full.”
The app can be accessed through The WELL’s website or by downloading the app on a smartphone. Participants would only be required to show up 5 minutes before the class to hold their spot.
Although the MindBody app offers the option to book a spot, instructors welcome drop ins for both the Group Fitness Classes and the Small Group Training Sessions.
“We’ve always wanted to get the percentage of people using The WELL and attending our classes,” Densmore said. “Hopefully they will come check it out and join our classes.”
