I was a part of a special fraternity at Sacramento State: The State Hornet newspaper. For eight semesters, a strong bond held us together by our shared mission. Everyday, enthusiasm and high-octane energy filled the air inside the second floor of the University Union as we worked on the production of a high-quality newspaper and an accompanying website. Hand-in-hand, we poured our hearts into our work. Writing. Editing. Designing. Idea-making. Everything we did contributed to our education to a degree that was not evident to us. It was hard to see then, but our work as practicing student journalists had profound consequences. We weren’t looking for some grand payoff. We did it because we loved it.

While my classroom experience at Sacramento State was also invaluable, I am also proud to say that my work at the Hornet helped me become the journalist I am today. I’m confident in saying that this holds true for many of my classmates and friends who’ve become excellent journalists or leaders in other fields related to communication.

For me, it provided a springboard for my first gig, which led to a full-time position as a member of the Sacramento Bee’s digital team. Today, eight years after graduation, and many one-nighters at the Hornet, I am a digital managing editor for Hearst Television.

I credit the stewardship from my faculty advisers, the support of my peers and the fraternity we all shared day in and day out as we learned and grew as student journalists. We didn’t do because it promised a good job in the field — and no one ever told us it would. And we certainly didn’t do it for the pay. We did it because we felt passionate about the principles of the occupation, because we knew it was a precious function of our democracy and it had the power to inform society. It’s good work with big responsibilities. And therefore training for this business is not easy. But the Hornet provides the right environment — and wonderful friends and supporters — to get off to the right start.
