The Sacramento State women’s softball team kicked off their season at the Aggie Invitational in Davis on Friday, Feb. 12, losing the season-opener in extras 5-4 against CSU Bakersfield.
The second game from Friday, versus UC Davis, was postponed tied at 0 after eight innings, with the game to be finished at a later date. The game was called due to darkness, as the softball field in Davis doesn’t have lights designed for night games.
The team went on to play three more games over the weekend, facing off against Santa Clara and Montana on Saturday, Feb. 13. After a close 1-0 loss to Santa Clara, the Hornets would come back with a 5-3 win over Montana later that day, and after a rematch against Santa Clara, they would get even by beating them 6-1 the next day to finish out the tournament and give the team an even record of 2-2.
Next up, Sac State travels to Fresno for the Fresno State Kick-Off, where the team will play three opponents in five games over the upcoming weekend. That includes two games against both UC Riverside and Fresno State, along with a match up versus Kansas.
Last season, Sac State split a pair of non-conference extra-inning games with UC Riverside. UC Riverside has already given up 33 runs this season, leading the team to a 2-3 record.
Fresno State, meanwhile, has gotten off to a quick start this season, with a 5-0 record heading into Friday’s game against Sac State. And with 26 runs scored over their first five games, Fresno State looks as though it will be competitive this year.
Kansas, who Sac State will be facing for the first time since 2013, has a 2-3 record and is coming off of two straight losses.
The 2-2 Hornets will hope to continue their win streak and momentum going for as long as possible. While the season is still young and these are not conference games, these matchups are competitive in nature and important for the team, with the trajectory of the season shaped in these games and tournaments.
Sac State’s first home game be on Wednesday, Feb. 2 when they host UC Davis.
