As spring 2015 begins to wind down and finals approaching, Sacramento State students share their plans for summer break.

Students such as Ashwini Suresh, Shweta Singh and Minnolini Nithyanandan, graduate students studying computer science, plan on traveling.

“I’m going to the east coast, Pennsylvania,” said Suresh. “My husband is living out there right now but I’m coming back to Sac State for the fall.”

Aside possibly traveling out of the country, Singh plans on using the summer to look for work on campus.

“I might vacation in India,” said Singh. “I wanted to work on campus but there hasn’t been any availability yet, I’m looking forward to finding a tech job sometime in the fall.”

Like Singh, Nithyanandan also hopes to find a job or internships this summer and next semester.

“I’m going to Alaska, to Denali National Park,” said Nithyanandan. “I’m going to spend the second half of summer looking for internships.

Many of the students understand the importance of internships and job experiences and plan on using their free time this summer to good use.

“I’m going to fix up my resume and work a lot,” said Tina Pham, a junior. “I haven’t had time because of school.”

Pham also plans on visiting the beach during the break, preferably Santa Cruz or San Francisco and is looking forward to the upcoming PhlagleBlast that will kick off fall 2015.

“My friend is running a 5K in San Francisco,” said Pham, who also volunteers for UNIQUE in her spare time. “I’m excited for the PlagleBlast and more UNIQUE events.”

Daisy Maravilla, a freshmen and another frequent UNIQUE volunteer hopes to see and spend time with her family.

“I haven’t seen them since spring break,” said Maravilla. “I’m going back to Bakersfield to go to summer school out there.”

Maravilla also plans on working and finding internships to help give her experience in her major.

“I’m studying kinesiology, I want to work or find internships at hospitals,” said Maravilla. “I’m planning on joining a sorority and participating in more UNIQUE events next semester.”

For graduating students such as Chrystyna Gillespi, a graduate student studying social work, summer is a time to find take a step into their career.

“I’m having my second child and I’ll be postponing work for about 6 months to a year,” said Gillespi. “After I go camping and spend some time in Washington and Oregon I’ll be applying for jobs.”

Gillespi also plans on spending more time with her children and getting her first child more involved in the community.

“I want to do more community work that are kid-oriented,” said Gillespi, “Library time, volunteering, karate classes.”

The soon to be graduate also has advice she wants to give to students that will be coming back next semester.

“Get more involved in the community on campus,” said Gillespi. “Get involved with clubs and go to events.

Graduating senior, Veronica Lopez, also shares the same advice. Lopez plans on traveling this summer and eventually moving out of Sacramento to settle somewhere in the Bay Area.

“I’m going to Vegas and Monterey Bay then moving to a new city,” said Lopez. “I want to secure a job after graduating so I can start paying back my student loans.”

As for her advice, Lopez encourages returning students to use what Sac State has to offer to help them in their future after college.

“Volunteer if you can, find internships, go to the career center,” said Lopez. “Try to be more open to campus and make the most of your last year.”
