Smoke from a fire poured out of the storage shed on the side of the outdoor track by The WELL at Sacramento State.

Sacramento Fire Department was dispatched at 3:32 p.m. to respond to the fire.

The storage shed contains equipment for varying departments including the pole vault team, The WELL, the Health Center and the track and field team.

Daniel Isaacs, pole vault coach, was conducting practice for his team when he heard metal popping inside the shed.

“We were in the middle of practice, just happened to look over and saw what I thought was dust coming over the building, so I went over just to look,” said Daniel Isaacs. “I got close. I could smell it. It had a chemical smell and then went to garage door. It felt warm and started seeing the smoke come from out the door.”

Members of the pole vault team tried to remove as much equipment as they could from the burning shed.

“We definitely had quite a few poles still in there,” said Isaacs. “We won’t know until we get in if they’re damaged.”

Sac State Police Chief Mark Iwasa said campus police headed to the approximate area to move people to safety.

Iwasa said the source of the fire is not likely to be discovered for a couple days.

“The fire department responded and extinguished the fire, but not until all the damage occured,” said Iwasa.
