The Hornets fall, 94-102, in their final non-conference game in offensive thriller

In their final non-conference game of the season, the Sacramento State Hornets were unable to pull out a victory over the San Jose Spartans (6-5), as they fell 94-102 on Monday afternoon. Sac State is finishing with a 2-9 overall record before heading into Big Sky Conference action on Jan. 1.

The women remain winless on the road this year as they drop to 0-9. During this time last season the team was able to tally an 8-1 record.

Sac State held a 10 point lead heading into the second half of the game at 53-43, shooting 42.2 percent from the field (19 of 45) and finishing 6 of 17 (35.3 percent) behind the arc.

The team’s leading scorers Hallie Gennett and Fantasia Hilliard contributed 16 points in the first half. Both players were the only ones to reach double figures for the team before halftime.

After a career-high 26 points from her game against Utah State, Gennett exploded on offense against the Spartans in the first half as she hit five 3-pointers, finishing five of six (83 percent) from beyond the arc. The Hornet finished with 22 points and five rebounds in 24 minutes as she came close to matching her best effort from Friday.

In the second half, the Hornets’ offense went cold as the Spartans were able to go on a 24-5 run and were consistently up by at least 10 points over the Hornets. The women struggled to score for the rest of the game, making only 15 of 59 shots (25.4 percent).

The Spartans had six players that were able to finish scoring in double digits and collectively shot 37 of 87 from the field (42.5 percent) and were seven of 19 (36.8 percent) from behind the arc. San Jose State struggled converting 3-pointers in the first half (two of 8), but were able to shake that off in the second as they hit six of 12. Sac State came off to a hot start behind they arc, but finished eight of 39 (20.5 percent).

Gretchen Harrigan had a big game on both sides of the ball as she finished with 20 points and seven rebounds in the women’s loss. The junior went 7 of 14 from the field and hit 6 of 8 (75 percent) free throws in 21 minutes of play.

Defensively, the women were able to score 15 points off of the Spartans 12 turnovers in the first half and the surrendered only four points off of their five turnovers in the same half. Margaret Huntington grabbed 18 rebounds for the Hornets and Takara Burse followed with 11 rebounds.

The women will face Northern Arizona (4-7) on the road to open Big Sky play on New Year’s Day at 1 p.m.
