Sacramento State women’s soccer (6-8-0, 1-4-0 Big Sky) women’s defeated Weber State (4-10-0, 1-4-0 Big Sky) by a final score of 2-0 this afternoon to get its first win of Big Sky Conference play.

The Hornets came out strong in both the first and second halves outshooting the Wildcats 13-11, as they put an end to their conference losing streak.

Sac State coach Randy Dedini said he was very pleased with the team’s performance and stressed the importance of the win today.

“We have been playing pretty well all season long and so it’s nice to finally get the result at the end of it,” Dedini said. “It was a great win for our girls, I think they deserve it. We’ve been working really hard for it and we’re going to continue to work.”

The Hornets got on the board 63 minutes in, as redshirt sophomore forward Maggie Pleis scored her first goal of the season. It was off a give and go with sophomore midfielder Lydia Bowman, who was credited with the assist.

Pleis said the team performed excellent today and added that this game was crucial for the team moving forward with the rest of the season.

“It was the most important game of the season, we’re taking every game one-by-one now, hopefully we get the next couple of wins,” Pleis said.

Later in the second half of play, senior forward Shelby Salvacion scored her second goal of the season as the Hornets went up 2-0. She shot top left from 15 yards out, as sophomore defender/midfielder Alexa Heinzer got the assist on the play.

Salvacion said she was thrilled to not only get the team up 2-0, but to score another goal on the year.

“It was honestly amazing because I haven’t been playing in a while,” Salvacion said. “I was ready to score because I wanted to play and if you’re going to put me out there, then I’m going to get the job done.”

Despite scoring two goals, the Hornets had other opportunities to put the ball in net. Redshirt junior forward Presley Strother came within a few feet of scoring an early first half goal, as her shot hit the top of the goal post.

When asked about the offensive opportunities and having scored two goals as a team today, Pleis stated that the Wildcats were finished.

“We needed the two goals that last one just put the team away, I mean they had no chance after that,” Pleis said.

The Hornets will play at home on Sunday against Idaho State at noon. This game is Sac State’s senior night where all six seniors on the roster will be celebrated prior to the announcement of the starting lineups.
