Women’s soccer drops final game to Portland State
October 31, 2014
The Sacramento State women’s soccer team (9-10-0, 4-6-0 Big Sky) lost their final regular season game to the Portland State Vikings (9-5-4, 6-2-2 Big Sky) by a final score of 2-0 Friday afternoon.
With the loss, the Hornets have officially been eliminated from post-season play.
The Hornets were the hottest team in the Big Sky Conference as they had won three consecutive games. In today’s game, they were determined to get a victory on the road and increase their chances of making the playoffs.
The Hornets had many scoring opportunities throughout the contest.
Within the first seven minutes of the game, sophomore defender/midfielder Alexa Heinzer’s header shot was saved by Vikings redshirt junior goalkeeper Caitlin Plese.
Hornets senior forward Kristen Bridges’s header shot was again saved by Plese,15 minutes later at the 22 minute mark, in the process keeping a scoreless tie.
The Hornets were outshot 7-3 by the Vikings in the first half. Yet, all three of their shots were on goal compared to just one for the Vikings. The first half came to a conclusion with a scoreless tie between the two teams.
Throughout the entire 2014 season, the Hornets have been known as a strong second half team, as Plese was busy in net throughout the contest.
At 53 minutes, the Hornets sophomore midfielder Lydia Bowman had a great chance to put the team up 1-0. Despite all the traffic in front of her, Plese somehow managed to save Bowman’s shot.
It wasn’t until late in the second half, in the 82nd minute, where the Vikings offense came to life. Vikings junior forward Tamia Hasan scored her third goal of the season as the Vikings had a 1-0 lead.
Three minutes later, Hasan scored again for the Vikings as the ball was centered and into the net past Hornets senior goalkeeper Kimberly Mata.
The Vikings were on top 2-0 with only five minutes left in the game.
For the Hornets their season was on the line, as the time continued to clock down.
In the second half, the Hornets were outshot by the Vikings 13-2. Mata finished the game with eights saves on the day.
Despite falling to the Vikings, the Hornets played outstanding soccer all year round. As they came up just a little bit short on qualifying for the Big Sky Conference tournament.
