Sac State dominates, routes North Dakota
October 17, 2014
Sacramento State women’s soccer (7-9-0) defeated North Dakota (1-11-1) this afternoon by a final score of 5-0 after a dominating second half that saw five goals.
This was their highest offensive scoring output of the 2014 season.
It was a tale of two halves for the Hornets today; they were scoreless through the first half, but demonstrated strength in the second half scoring goals from five different players.
Offensively for the Hornets, they outshot their opponent by a wide margin of 24-10 overall including 13 shots on goal.
It was a busy game for North Dakota’s goalkeeper Kristi Hestdalen, as she saved eight shots on the day. However, it wasn’t enough as the Hornets offense found a variety of different ways to score goals en route to securing their second Big Sky Conference victory.
In the 47th minute of play, junior forward Josie Jogwe got the Hornets on the board first as she scored her first goal of the 2014 season. Only 14 minutes later in the 61st minute, sophomore defender midfielder Alexa Heinzer scored to put the Hornets up 2-0, as this was also her first goal of the season.
Defensively for the Hornets, senior goalkeeper Kimberly Mata saved a total of three shots as she secured her fifth shutout victory of the 2014 season.
With this victory today over North Dakota, the Hornets are inching closer to making the Big Sky Conference tournament. The top six teams in the division will advance to the playoffs to determine who will win the Big Sky Conference.
Besides Jogwe and Heinzer; redshirt junior forward Presley Strother, sophomore forward Adaurie Dayak, and senior forward Kristen Bridges all contributed to the rest of the scoring that was on display this afternoon.
The colder temperatures and the North Dakota wind didn’t seem to factor in today’s game as the Hornets secured a win.
Next up, Sac State will travel to Northern Colorado to face the Bears (8-6-1) 11 a.m. Sunday.
