Healthier options at gas stations will fall flat

The gas station 7-11 recently unveiled its plan to work with the P90X creator to serve up healthier food options at their stores. While a great idea in theory, people are not looking to spend $5 for a sandwich when they can get a corn dog for 99 cents.

This goes for all fast food places that are trying to get customers to eat healthy by adding salads, grilled chicken sandwiches and other delights. The cost of these products is outstanding. Paying more than double the price of a simple burger and only maybe getting half the size of that burger does not make sense for an average customer.

People go through these fast stops for two reasons: convenience and price. If it is the latter, people are not going to care what they are eating if it fills them up and costs less than a dollar. Unfortunately, college kids and some households are under the poverty level and cannot afford to be picky with what they are eating. For this reason, the healthier options will go nowhere.

The other reason people go to these joints is for the convenience. Most of the people that go into a gas station are either paying cash for their gas, which is a rare commodity in itself these days, or to grab a quick bite to eat before or during a long trip.

People on a long trip are not going to have the time to eat a salad or free hands to do it if they are driving. For a passenger eating a salad on the road is a messy thing that most people do not want to hassle with, especially if they have kids.

While a sandwich may be the next best option, it can still be a messy hassle that is best solved with a bag of chips and a corn dog. Both are easy to handle and easy to clean up if spilled.

While a great idea to include healthy options, in the end it is a waste of everyone’s time and efforts to do something that will not work. Besides, who goes to 7-11 just for a sandwich? They go for the extra large slurpee and doughnuts, which smells great to customers as they walk into the land of obesity.
