Students waste no water responding to ALS challenge

Sacramento State students responded to the ALS awareness challenge from Chico State on Friday by jumping into the pool behind Draper hall, in an effort to accept without wasting water.

“I felt offended by the use of water from the drought; jumping in a pool is a good idea to do the challenge and not waste water,” said Yajayra Gonzalez Director of Arts and Letters for Associated Students Inc.

Gonzalez said this would be the third pool on campus they have jumped in and more than two hundred dollars had already been raised.

Beth Lesen, Associate Vice President of Student Engagement and Success, attended but did not jump.

“I’m so proud of our Hornets. When called to action, they always deliver,” Lesen said.

Lessen said Associated Student Inc.’s goal was to at least double what Chico raised.

“It really does get the whole campus involved when schools get nominated by other campuses. With each campus that gets involved, the amount will get bigger and bigger,” said Lesen.

Lauren Lombardo, president of ASI, had a personal story about ALS.

“I love the idea of the ALS challenge. My uncle was diagnosed with ALS 10 years ago and is still living. The expected living time once you are diagnosed with ALS is 3 to 4 years and he’s lived 10,” said Lombardo.

Sac State has nominated UC Davis, CSU Bakersfield, Humboldt State and Fresno State to take on the challenge.

The fundraising at Sac State for ALS is not over;there is still a chance to donate online or with ASI via check or cash.
