Women’s tennis loses to UC Irvine, Saint Mary’s in non conference play

The Hornets closed out their final home matches at Sacramento State of the season on a losing note as the women’s tennis team fell to No. 63 UC Irvine and No. 42 Saint Mary’s University this weekend, 4-1.

Sac State women’s tennis is now 2-12 in non conference play, and 0-8 against ranked teams this season.

Freshman Alina Soltanici pulled out the only singles victory against UC Irvine (13-5) on Saturday, overpowering Sarah Gong 6-1, 6-0.

The Anteaters clinched the match in singles position No. 4, where senior Katharina Knoebl was defeated 2-6, 4-6 by Kat Facey.

Senior Sophie Lohscheidt and freshman Deimante Bulatovaite were both up in their second sets at singles, but were left unfinished due to the match victory.

The Hornets failed to convert in doubles only claiming one set in all three matches. Lohscheidt and sophomore Olivia Boija defeated the Anteaters in a tiebreaker at 8-7, 8-4 in doubles position No. 1.

On Sunday, the women were unsuccessful against Saint Mary’s (10-6). The Gaels claimed the doubles point to start the match, defeating two out of the three Hornet duos.

Lohscheidt picked up the lone Sac State victory in singles match No. 2, where the senior defeated Danielle Flores 6-3, 6-4.

Bulatovaite faced the Gaels No. 101-ranked Catherine Leduc and was routed 2-6, 5-7 to secure the victory for Saint Mary’s. Solantici was topped by No. 8-ranked senior Jenny Julien in singles-match No. 1 in straight sets.

The women will head out on the road this weekend to wrap up conference. On Friday, Sac State will face the University of Montana and Montana State, and then will close out against Northern Arizona University on Sunday.
