Parking Structure I closed after unidentified driver hits wall, causes damage

University Transportation and Parking Services shut down Parking Structure I Tuesday morning, after a vehicle collided with a wall on the second floor.

Victor Takahashi, director of Facilities, Planning and Construction Services, said several ramps will remain closed through Wednesday.

“We did bring out a structural engineer this morning to assess the damage,” Takahashi said. “We feel like we need to close off a couple ramps because there are some broken cables because of the damage.”

The broken cables are in the ramp floors and will be temporarily fixed until summer when a more permanent repair is made.

About 50 parking spots will be closed off to give workers room to make the repairs and employees should be available to help guide students and staff through the one available entrance Wednesday.

Two cars were damaged on the ramp between the first and second floors.

“They struck it from the second floor with sufficient force to cause some damage to the concrete itself and also to push it back,” said Tony Lucas, senior director of UTAPS. “They were two vehicles parked here…and they were struck hard enough to where the concrete pieces actually came this way and broke one of the windshields of the vehicles.”

Lucas estimated the accident took place between 7:15 and 9:00 a.m.

The place where the barrier meets the floor was pushed back three inches.

Sac State’s Risk Management department is also investigating.  Lucas said the garage is currently closed as a precaution until a structural engineer can analyze the structure’s damage.

“It should be open tomorrow. Part of it will be shut down, it will be the section with the damage that is closed off,” said Sacramento State police chief Mark Iwasa.

Police are following up on witness information.

“If we have to go through all the steps then there is no doubt that the person is trying to evade identification,” Iwasa said. “I can understand panicking and leaving but we encourage the responsible party to get in touch with us.”
