Women’s tennis comes up short against Washington

The Hornets were handed their fifth tiebreaker loss this season against No. 24 University of Washington 4-3, in Seattle, Sunday. Sac State women’s tennis squad was one point away from defeating a ranked opponent for the third time this year.

In singles action, Hornets sophomore Jennifer Nguyen faced the Huskies nationally ranked player, No. 111 Elian Douglas-Miron. Nguyen won the first set but fell 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No.1.

In a close matchup at No. 3 singles, freshman Alina Soltanici picked up her first victory of the season, winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Sophia Lohscheidt improved to 5-2 completing a sweep over the Huskies Riko Shimizu at 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 4 singles position. The other Hornet singles victory came from Olivia Boija at No. 6, where she defeated Sophia Bott at 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles, the Hornets were unsuccessful in converting in the No.1 and No. 2 matches. Hornet sophomore duo, Nguyen and Daria Savchenko, in match No. 2, were defeated in a tiebreaker at 9-7.

Sac State (1-7) will open up its Big Sky Conference play at home on Mar. 15 against Southern Utah and Weber State.
