Women’s tennis loses in Causeway action against UC Davis

The Sacramento State women’s tennis team headed to rival UC Davis Sunday for Causeway Cup action, but fell short 4-3 to the Aggies.

The Hornets dropped to 1-5 while the Aggies improved to 4-5.

The victory came down to the final singles match where Aggies senior Melissa Kobayakawa defeated Hornet senior Katharina Knoebl 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 at the No.4 spot.

This was the first singles match Knoebl has played this spring due to lingering wrist injuries of tendinitis and inflammation.

Sophomore Daria Savchenko won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3, and freshman Deimante Bulatovaite claimed a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 6 to put the Hornets up 3-2. Senior Sophie Lohscheidt was victorious over the Aggies Tiffany Pham in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5.

Sophomore Jennifer Nguyen was defeated by Aggies Megan Heneghan in straight sets at singles match No.1.

The Aggies claimed the doubles point with an 8-3 win at No. 1 and an 8-5 win at No. 2. Knoebl and freshman Alina Soltanici, of the Hornets, defeated the Aggies Samantha Martino and Pham 8-5 at the No. 3 doubles spot.

Sac State will be on the road next weekend heading to Seattle to face Texas Christian University on Friday and the University of Washington on Sunday.
