Sacramento State was held scoreless in its final game of the series against No.21 Texas A&M, Sunday in College Station, Texas.

After scoring five runs but losing in walk-off fashion on Saturday, the Hornets could only muster up seven hits in the 5-0 shutout against the Aggies. It was the first time this season that Sac State was held scoreless in a game.

Texas A&M starting pitcher Grayson Long threw seven innings, striking out two and only allowing five hits. It was the first win of the season for Long.

Senior first baseman Clay Cederquist was the only Hornet to have multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with two singles.

Sac State’s starting pitcher, freshman Jared Padarez, threw four innings surrendering two earned runs. It was Padarez’s second straight four-inning start and he is now 0-1 on the season.

Head coach Reggie Christiansen was proud of the way his team did against a quality opponent in a big environment.

“I thought we played good, the atmosphere was electric,” Christiansen said. “Our kids aren’t accostomed to playing in front of it.”

The Hornets managed to only win one game against the Aggies, but they have shown that Sac State is able to play with a top-25 team. Sac State won Friday’s game, 1-0, behind strong pitching performances from junior Ty Nichols and sophomore Sutter McLoughlin.

“Playing on Friday was something special for these kids, something they’ll remember forever.”

Junior first baseman Rhys Hoskins injured his ankle in the fourth inning of that game and did not return in the series. Christiansen is confident that Hoskins will return in time for the series against the University of San Francisco on Friday.

“We’re hoping this weekend, we’re hoping he will be back ready to go on Friday,” Christiansen said. “He was moving around OK today.”

On Saturday, the Hornets scored three runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game only to lose in the bottom of the inning courtesy of a walk-off home run by Aggies third baseman Logan Nottebrok, his second homerun of the game. Nottebrok was 3-for-13 on the series with two home runs, four RBIs and three runs scored.

Sac State (4-4) will return to Sacramento to play the University of Nevada, Reno at Raley Field on Tuesday. The Hornets will play seven games this season at Raley Field. They have only played five games at Raley Field since the stadium opened in 2000.

First pitch is at 6:35 p.m.
