Bruins defense too much for Sac State in blowout loss

UCLA was too much for Sacramento State’s men’s basketball team to handle at Pauley Pavilion, Monday night.

After trailing by 13 at halftime, the No. 22 Bruins went on a 21-6 run that led to an 86-50 victory.

This was the biggest defeat the Hornets saw since they lost to Washington State by 48 points in 2010.

Sac State held its own in the first half even taking a 10-9 lead when junior point guard Dylan Garrity hit a 3-pointer with 13:10 left in the first half. He finished with a team-high 18 points.

The Hornets experienced early foul trouble when freshman center Eric Stuteville was called for his third foul with eight minutes remaining in the half. Stuteville started his first career college game for the injured senior, Joey Quigley, who experienced a groin injury earlier this week.

From there, the Bruins finished on a 15-6 run.

In the second half, UCLA was led by sophomore guard Jordan Adams, finishing with a game-high 21 points and was 4-5 from 3-point range. Senior forward David Wear added 12 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season and freshman Zach LeVine came off the bench with 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Hornets were down by as much as 39, until junior guard Mikh McKinney hit his first 3-point shot with 2:42 left in the game. McKinney finished with seven points and was 3-14 from the floor.

Sac State concludes its three-game road trip Nov. 26 when they travel to Causeway rival UC Davis. Although the Hornets lost the game last year, they have won the last two meetings at The Pavilion.
