Intramural sports is a great opportunity for freshmen

Gabe Pacheco

When I came to campus in Fall 2010, it was bad not having a connection here with the people I gazed at each day, but I was an athlete who loved to play sports. Quickly, I found out how serious other students enjoyed and took the competition one step further with intramural sports.

Nothing brings us closer than playing sports collectively. At the WELL, the fitness and recreational facility, you will find all the different sports available. You may have to pay a small fee of $5-10, but it is worth it.

Intramural sports let you meet new people and develop a sense of belonging to campus.

From 5-on-5 basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer, dodgeball and flag football, you are sure to find a sport offered that will interest you.

You also do not need worry about not having enough people to make a full team. There is a free agent roster list that will allow prospective teammates to add you to their roster.

Once added to a team, you become a member of an online network, allowing you to interact with other teams, see results of games and your team’s standings among other opponents.

As a reward for winning a team sport in intramural activities, you will also receive a championship ring to show off to those you went up against.

Now, unfortunately, I never won a ring during my time, but I still found it worth my while to go out and participate in as many sports as I could, because I knew I was not going to find or meet the new friends I have made elsewhere.

So head over to the WELL and sign up for some games, because intramural sports were just one of the highlights of my time as a Sacramento State Hornet.
