Staff pick: Bonn Lair

Anna Puccinelli

A small, mellow pub called Bonn Lair is tucked in the heart of midtown; its slogan is “Bringing a taste of Europe to Sacramento.” This restaurant and bar attracts a younger crowd of people through indie music, calm ambiance and a vintage vibe.

The den-like restaurant is dimly lit with antique decorations, including a cash register that resembles a typewriter. The pub offers seating at booths, the bar or more comfortable seating in the lounge area. Hip music plays throughout the restaurant, such as Death Cab for Cutie, the Killers, the Kooks and the Bravery.

The restaurant is informal; you seat yourself and wait for the servers to approach with menus. Most of the dishes offered are heavy on the meat, such as the shepherd’s pie and bangers and mash. They also serve meatless options, like the veggie burger and vegetable pasties. The dishes are reasonably priced, averaging around $10 each.

Bonn Lair strictly limits its alcohol selection to beer and wine. The bar has an excellent selection of European beers, with more than 35 available. Cider is also available on the menu, which is a good gluten-free option.

For those who are adventurous and want to experiment with different kinds of beer, ask for the drink menu. The menus are informative and include the style of beer, the country it is from and the alcohol percentage.

For those who are under the age of 21, Bonn Lair allows younger adults into the restaurant and IDs are checked at the bar instead of being checked at the door. The restaurant permits children, but evenings here are adults-only.

Bonn Lair offers deals throughout the week, including $1 Irish tacos on Monday nights, happy hour every day from 4-6 p.m, occasional beer, wine and cider tastings and trivia. The back of the lounge has dartboards so customers can play a few rounds with friends.

Bonn Lair is located at 3651 J St in Midtown Sacramento. Its hours are 11:30 A.M. to 1 A.M. from Monday to Sunday.
