A lab oven inside Alpine Hall overheated filling the building with smoke Wednesday evening.

Captain Dexter Ching of the Sacramento Fire Department said the smoke was caused by overheating plastic in the oven.

“It looks like a heating oven of some kind was left on,” Ching said. “Contained inside was a plastic tray and it looked like rice was left on [it]. The plastic tray overheated and melted to the bottom, and that’s what was burning.”

Senior criminal justice major Kayla Swank said she and her classmate were heading to class when they saw the smoke.

“We were running late and walking up to class,” Swank said. “We saw the smoke coming out of the far side of the building.”

Ching said although the building was filled with smoke, there was no damage to the building or the heating unit.

“Everything was contained and wasn’t spread [and] there wasn’t a fire. It was just plastic burning,” Ching said. “[There was] no damage at all. The unit wasn’t damaged either. They just need to clean it off.”
