Hornet gymnastics defeat Anchorage in strong meet

Sacramento State women’s gymnastics took first place in all four events, which led to a big victory over the University of Alaska, Anchorage, 193.000-190.325 Sunday in The Nest.

Sac State started its first rotation off strong with six made vaults and a successful exhibition by freshman Tina Necas.

Junior Nicole Meiller anchored the vault rotation with a score of 9.75, which put her in first place tied with the Seawolfs’ Shakea Sanders.

“We had a great start on vault so we’re happy with the results,” said head coach Kim Hughes. “Our score was a little lower than last week, but still a good performance.”

The bars rotation was rough for the Hornets. Necas started them off with a fall followed by a mistake made by sophomore Ashley Woof on her dismount.

Bar exhibitions for Sac State included a successful routine from freshman Kayla Wonderly and an unfinished routine by senior Mary Peck.

“On bars we just didn’t execute all the way through,” Hughes said. “We actually didn’t count a fall, but we had form breaks, missed handstands and missed landings on dismounts.”

Once again, Meiller anchored the event with a first place score of 9.85, just .025 away from her career-high bar score.

It did not get much better for the Hornets as they moved to beam and put up their second lowest score of the season with a 47.300.

Back-to-back falls were counted by Peck and freshman Dallas Smith, followed by a fall which was dismissed by sophomore Elideth Guerrero.

“I don’t know what to say about beam,” Hughes said. “We’re struggling a little bit and next week we’ve got to show improvement.”

After the three falls, Kailey Hansen brought the Hornets back with the highest beam score of the meet, a 9.775.

“We knew we had to make up for our bars on beam and floor and the girls just got really nervous,” Hansen said. “We need to start getting it together because we always do really well in practice and we got to just put the same thing into competition.”

The Hornets moved on from a couple tough events to finish the meet with a successful floor rotation with the team’s second-highest season floor score of 48.875.

Sac State swept the podium on floor exercise with Hansen in first, Beutler coming in second and Smith, Kaila Kilwein and Kalliah McCartney tying for third.

Smith earned her career-high floor score of 9.75, which was shared by Kilwein and McCartney.

“Floor really is one of our strongest events,” Hughes said. “It’s certainly a place where they can showcase and put all the energy they have left in the end out there on the floor and they’re doing a good job of that.”

Regardless of the mistakes the Hornets made on bars and beam, they kept their composure and got the win against the Seawolves.

“Floor and vault are just those events for us where we don’t have to think a lot and that’s what we need to start doing on beam and bars,” Hansen said.

Some weeks are better than others for the Hornets, but the team remains positive and confident, especially Hansen.

“It was a really great meet,” Hansen said. “It was sad to see us fall apart here and there, but we’ll get them next time.”
