Sac State’s KSSU and Blood Source mascot Drippy welcomed students to the fourth annual Causeway Classic Blood Drive with music and high fives.

The blood drive took place at Sac State on Oct. 18 and 19, with UC Davis scheduled to hold its drive on Nov. 1 and 2.

“I think it’s my duty as a person to help other people however I can,” Quynn Meyers-Keller, a junior communications major said. “It’s important because not many people take the time to donate blood, and it’s a vital resource that can literally save lives. I’ve donated twice, each time at Sac State during the Causeway Classic.”

Sac State’s first Causeway Classic Blood Drive gathered 700 pints of blood and has almost doubled in size since then, with last year’s drive totaling of over 1300 pints.

“I hope we beat last year’s total with like 2000 pints,” Crystal Raney, a freshman business major said. “Of course, I hope we beat Davis, too.”

All participants this year received a Blood Source t-shirt, a coupon for a chicken sandwich from Chick-fil-A, a 25 percent Gap discount coupon and was entered into a drawing to win many other prizes.

“I feel that it’s important to give back to people who are in need,” Cheyanne Barba, a sophomore communications major said. “The blood drive on Tuesday was my third time donating. I donate because my brother got into a bad car accident and needed a blood transfusion a couple years ago, and without that blood who knows what could have happened to him.”

Donors supporting the Causeway Classic can donate at any Blood Source location through Nov. 2 and ask to have it count towards Sac State’s numbers.

“Don’t think that just because so many people donate blood, you don’t need to; there’s always room for more,” Meyers-Keller said.

The college with the most blood donations will be announced at the Causeway Classic football game on Nov. 19.
